Foursquare crosses 5 million users

Foursquare is a location-based mobile application which has increased its user base by 10 times in just nine months.

It is a multipurpose network, makes cities interesting to explore, helps in finding friends,act as a social city guide and offers game that challenges users to experience new things, and rewards them for doing so.

Foursquare lets users “check in” to a place when they’re there, tell friends where they are and track the history of where they’ve been and who they’ve been there with.

Foursquare has applications for iPhone, Android, Blackberry, and Windows Mobile. Users share their location with friends by “checking in” via a smart phone app or by text message. Points are awarded for checking in at various venues.

Foursquare in March at SXSW 2010, had more than half a million users. In April, it surpassed 1 million and now the company has 5 million users, more than 10 times it had in March.
