Website Migration Step by Step with SEO Tips by Subodh Gupta

I have been running one of my hobby site on Yahoo small business hosting services since 2004 which was good option than however now in 2015 with the changing Google search requirements there were many functions such as Mobile adaptability, Google Tags, accessing HT access file etc. it become mandatory for us to shift our site to a different hosting provider.

My hobby website consisted of around 250 pages and following are the steps which I went through.

(1)Identify the new Web Host and new CMS based on my requirements.

(2)I deleted all the unnecessary emails from all my email folders and downloaded the relevant one’s to my desktop email software.

(3) Make a list of All URLs using software XENU and Google Webmaster.

(4)Identify all the important URLs. All URLs which have inbound links are very important as you wouldn’t like to lose link value while migrating your website. Google webmaster give you information about the URL which have inbound links.

(5)I did the mapping of all the URLs. Every CMS can have different URL structure so made all the corresponding URLS where the existing URL will be redirected.

(6)Since my CMS were different at both hosting providers, my site content can’t be simply uploaded to another hosting provider. So I saved all the important site content on my desktop.

(7) Downloaded and saved my all images in one folder.

(8)I planned the whole structure of my new website from A to Z from main Menu Bar to Main pages to Subpages to Categories to Blogs posts, etc.

(9)I Identified the Plugin for 301redirect.

(10)DNS were changed.

(11)Email account were set up and tested on new hosting provider.

(12) Content uploaded to the new URLs which was already decided and 301redirect simultaneously were done. First I started with the most important content with maximum inbound links. Redirected URLs were tested and worked fine.

(13)Image folder containing all the images uploaded directly to the media section in the CMS.

(14)Titles were furthered improved taking into consideration keyword traffic from Google keyword planner.

(15)Internal linking structure was maintained as before and improved further.

(16)Google somehow seems to prefer long articles so I added additional content on most important articles/pages.

(17)Check the Google webmaster tool to see if there are any warning or message and all seems fine.

(18) Additional functions added to the site such as social media integration etc. and site is ranking better than before now and looks more professional. 🙂

Note: Many of the so called SEO consultant /experts /agencies recommended different SEO tools however I would say Google (Google webmaster/Analytics/Keyword planner) provide most exhaustive and accurate info so why use small companies which have limited data.
